Objective:

Understand the basic principles of medical malpractice, including issues of duty, standard of care,
breach of duty, cause in fact proximate cause and damages, and how these requisite elements
must be present in any case.

Appreciate the situations in which medical malpractice risk is heightened in Dermatology and
Dermatopathology, including when prescribing medications, when performing/failing to perform
a biopsy or other intervention and with regard to follow-up

Utilize fundamentally sound documentation, instruction, liberal and expert consultation and
appropriate follow-up to minimize medicolegal risk and maximize favorable patient outcomes
and better patient care/patient experiences
